Summer Tips for Your Prosthetic Limb
Summer is a great time to get outdoors and explore, but it also means more sweating. Excessive sweat and heat can take a toll on prosthetic limbs and the skin near them. It's not only uncomfortable, but it can cause the skin to break down.
Luckily, we have a few things that can help you through until it cools down in the fall.
- Whenever you feel a buildup of sweat or discomfort, take off your prosthetic limb and dry your skin and liner with a clean, dry cloth.
- Use an antiperspirant, such as Alps Prosthetic Anti-Perspirant, on your residual limb before you put on your prosthetic limb to reduce sweat.
- Ask your physician if an antiperspirant cream, like Drysol, is right for you to reduce excessive sweating.
- Your residual limb can shrink as you sweat, so keep prosthetic socks with you. Keeping your prosthetic limb snug will prevent skin breakdown.
